Hiking Techniques
Basic Hiking is Walking and thus does not require any great technical knowledge. However, there are a lot of things that separate a good hiker from a great hiker and those are the Basic Hiking Techniques. Once Hiking crosses over into all mountain traversing or more specific Hiking Disciplines, more technical skills come into play. In this
section, we will take a close look at the basic Hiking Tips and Techniques.

101+ Hiking Tips
I was asked to present a talk titled 101 Plus Hiking Tips and am sharing these tips here. Credit for these should go to many sources as I have followed the advice of many fellow hikers. Special mention should be made, however, of the experienced hikers that have contributed their knowledge to the Backpacking Light Mailing List and to two books; Ray
Jardine's Beyond Backpacking and A Hiker's Companion by Cindy Ross & Todd Gladfelter.

You don't have to be a wilderness survival expert to go off tramping in the woods, but a person needs to have a sound grounding in the basics of the outdoors. It's the hiker's or backpacker's responsibility to obtain the necessary knowledge, preparation and equipment to ensure a safe hike.
Joining a group or club can be a great way to get some of the knowledge and training.

Hiking
Why should you hike- It's elegant and egalitarian!
Think about a hike: Low overhead and anyone can do this! No set of wheels to buy and master, as in bicycling, skateboarding, motorcycling, Indy 500 auto racing ... no ball to control - as in golf, tennis, baseball, football, bowling, basketball, hot air ballooning ... no fighting the elements for balance with a recalcitrant object - as in skiing, surfing, kayaking, sailing, flying ... no body threatening activity - as in boxing, wrestling, marathon running, ski diving.

Trans Canada Trail
At the heart of the Trail’s promotional efforts is the difficult task of trail-building. People just like you are working side by side with professional tree-fellers, earth-movers, fence-installers and boulder-shifters. Helping communities develop the capacity to start trail groups and maintain the trail in the long term is key.
It is also our job to tell the world about the Trail. Public service announcements, corporate partnerships, merchandise development, and the website are some of the ways we do just that.
